Philip Hardstone reveals more about his liberating journey and how he became convinced bottom-up democracy is the way forward.
I worked for Kirklees Housing Services for 28 years, primarily collaborating with the Kirklees Federation of Tenant and Residents Associations and individual tenant and resident groups. Our goal was to improve the quality of homes and services while building thriving communities. Working closely with council housing residents was my most thrilling and rewarding career experience. Yet, it was not without its challenges. We faced resistance, scepticism, and bureaucratic hurdles. However, we persisted, overcoming these obstacles to make a significant difference in the quality of life on Kirklees Council estates.
Our efforts profoundly impacted social housing governance across England, demonstrating the power of community engagement and the potential for positive change. Our work was so influential that the Blair Government awarded us Beacon Status.
Thirteen years ago, I decided to retire early, partly driven by my desire to use my experience with Kirklees tenant and resident groups for a greater cause. By joining the Yorkshire Party, I found the love and support of close colleagues, which gave me the courage and confidence to launch Liberating Yorkshire last year. This journey has been a significant part of my personal growth and development, inspiring me to continue making a difference at 71 years of age.
